What about if you reboot the computer with the devices already attached (and powered on where relevant)? Does this make any difference? How about when booted from an external drive (or is the dock the only means you have of using such things?). What does System profiler say about the ports? Does it recognise their existence if nothing plugged in at all? Does it identify a device if you plug it in and then "refresh" system profiler? If not, do the devices all suddenly appear when you plug in the dock with the wonderful ameliorative capabilities and then refresh? Not sure what other USB devices you have available to you, but if you try them one at a time (just a mouse, for example, or just a keyboard, etc), with nothing else connected, does the problem still occur? (You've probably tried this already, but it would be helpful to be sure you've tried it with one device at a time, and with more than one different device). Gav, have you completely eliminated the possibility that it isn't caused by some sort of interaction effect. If anyone else has had this problem, or knows of it and how to fix it, please offer some advice. I have tried clearing the boot cache etc etc, but nothing has worked. I have tried booting in safe mode, tried taking the battery out and leaving it unplugged and without battery for more than 15 minutes.

I have booted in windows to see if it's an OS X problem, but the same results occured. But if the dock is not plugged in, no USB device works. Even if the dock is connected to a USB hub which is connected to the macbook, this causes both ports on the macbook to work fine. I have an external hard drive docking station, and when the USB cable from that is plugged into one of the macbooks USB ports, they both work fine.
